Description

A sweetener made by fermenting brown rice with special enzyme mixer to break down the starches. It has a relatively low glycemic index due to high levels of maltotriose - a slowly digested simple sugar. It is only about 1/5 as sweet as table sugar.

Food manufacturers often use brown rice syrup in conjunction with stevia to mask off flavors. Used as an alternative to high fructose corn syrup. In February 2012, there were news reports of high levels of arsenic being found in products containing organic brown rice syrup. Of the two types of arsenic, organic and inorganic, inorganic arsenic (from arsenic-based pesticides) can be more problematic than organic arsenic when consumed and was found in elevated levels in organic brown rice syrup. Possible Health Effects

May cause blood sugar spikes in diabetics. If the brown rice syrup contains arsenic, may cause skin issues including skin color changes, corns, and warts. High levels of arsenic can cause death.

Due to the recent concerns with arsenic levels in foods, consumers should keep brown rice syrup consumption to a minimum until arsenic levels are mandated and tested by the FDA.
