Petroleum-derived preservative which helps to prevent spoilage due to oxidation. One of the most commonly used antioxidants in foods.
Also used as an additive in cosmetics, jet fuels, electric transformer oil and embalming fluid. Some animal studies indicate that it causes cancer and birth defects. Prohibited as an additive in the United Kingdom.
