Additional Information

Following several animal studies which showed the sweetener to be carcinogenic, Cyclamates were banned in the US in 1969 and United Kingdom a year later. In 2000, the European Commission's Scientific Community on Food reversed its position on Cyclamates. The sweetener remains banned in Norway and United States. Abbott Laboratories, who owns the US patent, has a petition with the FDA to have the ban on Cyclamates removed (although it is not actively being considered).
