Also See Sugar and Brown Sugar. Sugar cane which has been pressed to release its juices. Cane juice has the same amount of calories as table sugar, but may contain more vitamins and minerals. It is generally less processed than table sugar, although some manufacturers may add href="/ingredients/fructose.php" class="bfslink" target="_blank">fructose to the mix. Organic varieties are also found on ingredient labels which generally means the sugar cane was grown organically.

Additional Information

It is made by crushing sugar cane between a large series of rollers. The sweet juice is extracted and then undergoes a variety of processes to remove impurities. The juice is boiled and then crystallized. In many countries, fresh sugar cane juice is enjoyed as a beverage by millions of people. Roadside vendors crush fresh sugar cane and may mix it with lemon, ginger, mint or serve on ice. The FDA stated in 2009 that because Evaporated Cane Juice is not technically a juice as defined by the FDA, the term, Evaporated Cane Juice, should not be used on ingredient labels.
