A sugar alcohol sweetener made from milk sugar, containing just 2.4 calories per gram compared with 4 calories in regular sugar.
Used in sugar-free candies, cookies, biscuits, chocolate, and ice cream. Also used in constipation medicine because of its laxative properties. It is listed as an excipient, a substance that binds the contents of a pill or tablet, in some prescription drugs, such as Adderall.

Avoid if lactose intolerant.
