Description

Sugar alcohol is the broad term for hydrogenated carbohydrates, meaning the carbohydrate has been treated with hydrogen producing a chemical reaction resulting in a particular sugar alcohol. Different carbohydrates produce different reactions with hydrogen and consequently different sugar alcohols.

Possible Health Effects

Sugar alcohols in excess may create a laxative effect and many must carry that warning on the label. Nausea, vomiting, bloating, diarrhea, hives, kidney disfunction, gastric irritation and anaphylaxis are other negative health effects. Different sugar alcohols effect blood sugar levels in various ways.
