Description

An essential vitamin required for the maintenance of calcium and phosphorus in the blood which dictates the health of most bones in the body. Vitamin D is produced in the human skin during exposure to UV light. It is also needed for bone growth and remodeling. RDI is 5 ug/day for adult males and females. Please check USDA Dietary Guidance for intakes for children, pregnant women or for persons with chronic disease.

Additional Information

Vitamin D deficiency results in rickets and osteomalacia. Rickets occurs in children during bone growth resulting in weak malformed long bones. Osteomalacia is most common in the elderly and is characterized by brittle weak bones that break very easily. Many common diseases such as heart disease and depression are associated with low levels of Vitamin D.

Possible Health Effects

Toxicity can occur if high levels are ingested and result in hyperalcemia. If this occurs during pregnancy it can result in fetal retardation and deformities
